Successful test transport of human NK cells

Biotechnology has long faced the challenge of finding suitable transport methods for cells and tissues. The previous method of cryopreservation caused stress and physiological changes to the cells, making it difficult to transport delicate structures and therapies. Cellbox Solutions, a spin-out from Fraunhofer, have developed a portable CO2 incubator, the Cellbox™ Shipper, which for the first time enables the shipment of highly fragile biological materials. This innovation represents a significant advantage for researchers and patients, as fast and reliable transport of living cells and cell systems is of great importance.
Transport:
In collaboration with time:matters, the Fraunhofer Institute IZI, and Cellbox Solutions, a test transport was conducted to demonstrate the benefits of optimal transport for fragile biological material. The shipment of human NK cells took place between Leipzig and Schleswig-Holstein. Time:matters and Cellbox Solutions took great effort on preparation and planning to ensure optimal transport conditions throughout the transport.
The courier, organized and trained by time:matters, picked up the Cellbox™ Shipper in Leipzig and handed it over to the train conductor of Deutsche Bahn, where it was safely stored during the journey to Hamburg. After the short trip, another courier received the Cellbox™ from the train and securely delivered it to Norderstedt. This precise coordination and transport process ensured that the immune cells arrived in optimal conditions and were ready for further examination at their destination.
Results:
The human immune cells arrived at the destination in optimal condition, demonstrating that this type of transport offers significant advantages over conventional cold-chain shipment. The logistics of fragile cell therapeutics can be significantly improved by combining the right logistics companies with the right technology.
A swift transport, in this case with the ic:kurier from time:matters, supports a fast and reliable transport, which is crucial for the quality and integrity of medical samples. Through the expertise of all involved and the technology of Cellbox Solutions, it was ensured that the cells reached their destination safely, making an important contribution in the field of cell logistics.
